A Starry Night in Winchester: Van Gogh Alive Lights Up the South Downs

This winter, Van Gogh Alive arrives at Winchester Science Centre with a stunning 360-degree dome experience beneath the South Downs’ starry skies

This winter, Winchester will become the stage for an extraordinary cultural event as Van Gogh Alive, the world’s most visited immersive art experience, makes its UK dome premiere beneath the stars of the South Downs International Dark Sky Reserve. From 22 January to 22 March 2026, visitors can step inside the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh at Winchester Science Centre, in a way never before seen in the region.

Created by Grande Experiences, Van Gogh Alive has captivated over 10 million visitors across 110 cities worldwide and now it arrives in Hampshire with a groundbreaking twist: its first-ever UK presentation inside a planetarium dome. This unique setting will deliver a 360-degree visual and sensory journey, blending art, music, and storytelling in a spectacular 45-minute show.
Visitors will be transported through Van Gogh’s world – from the Dutch countryside to the vibrant streets of Arles and the tranquil gardens of Saint Rémy – surrounded by more than 3,000 high-definition projections of his most iconic works, including Starry Night, Sunflowers, and The Bedroom. Accompanied by a stirring classical soundtrack, the experience offers not just a screening of art, but an emotional voyage into the artist’s mind, weaving together his paintings with extracts from letters and journals.

Beyond the dome, Wonderseekers has transformed part of the Science Centre into an interactive environment, inviting guests to wander through a field of sunflowers and step inside Van Gogh’s masterpieces. For Ben Ward, Chief Executive at Wonderseekers, the exhibition represents a bold vision: “Van Gogh Alive is a powerful fusion of art, science and emotion. Beneath the skies that inspired Van Gogh, audiences will discover how creativity and curiosity intersect.”

“This exclusive presentation of Van Gogh Alive at Winchester Science Centre will offer visitors of all ages an entertaining, educational and enlightening experience,” said Bruce Peterson, Founder & CEO of Grande Experiences. “It’s a chance to see Van Gogh’s genius in a whole new light.”

The timing is symbolic as February 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the South Downs National Park’s designation as an International Dark Sky Reserve, echoing Van Gogh’s fascination with the night sky.
