National disability charity Motability is calling for teams to enter its annual 5-a-side Football Charity Challenge in Derby, which will raise funds to support disabled people with their mobility.

The event takes place on Saturday 7 June 2014, at the Powerleague Soccerdome, Pride Park, Derby. Teams of eight people are needed to take part, who will have the chance to win a number of prizes and play at least one match with an ex-professional player.

Each year Motability fundraises for customers who need a charitable grant, such as Motability customer Joan, who lives near Derby. Joan has arthritis in her spine and knees and uses a powered wheelchair as she cannot walk long distances. She received help towards paying for a powered wheelchair hoist to be fitted, which allows her to easily and safely load her powered wheelchair in and out of the car. Joan said: “The wheelchair hoist is so easy to use, all it takes is a push of a button to get my wheelchair in and out of the car. I’m so grateful for the grant I received from Motability, the money they raise and the donations they receive really do change peoples’ lives.”

Teams are required to pay an entry fee of £500, which covers entry and includes breakfast on arrival and a post tournament buffet. The tournament consists of both a cup and plate competition with prizes for the winners of each and FA-qualified referees will be officiating at all the matches.

“Whether you want to come along as an established team, or have never played together before, it would be great to see as many people taking part as possible,” said Aine Canavan, Motability Corporate Accounts Executive. “Having raised £18,000 in 2013, we are excited to be returning to Derby this year to raise even more money. It’s an action-packed afternoon, with great prizes on offer, as well as the opportunity to play with some familiar ex-professional players.”

She added: “The funds will be used to support disabled people who cannot afford the right car or adaptations for their needs, or to help Motability customers aged 16-34 with driving lessons.”
