Students at Hereward College in Tile Hill have raised £250 towards the construction of a new health clinic in Zimbabwe, part of the charitable Chengeta School Project.
Inspiration struck after Jim Noonan, retired teacher from Solihull and founder of the project, came in to the college to talk to the students about the charity’s efforts. The tenacious NVQ Business Administration students have since spent the last six months incorporating the appeal into their own curriculum, leading them to both qualification and fundraising success.
The Chengeta School Project was born out of the plight of the people of Zimbabwe in December 2007, with the ambition of building a brand new rural primary school where there were previously abandoned and derelict farm sheds. The school, along with daily meal provision, a well, a football pitch and teaching equipment are now in place, but the project is continuing with the provision of a safe and sterile health clinic, offering the children essential immunisations. Jim’s tireless fundraising, which is generated by providing a local odd job service, was a real inspiration to the Hereward group.
Their successful fundraising events included market stalls, name the cuddly toy and an annual Kick Start event which promotes healthy eating and regular exercise. The dedicated students gave up their own time as well as classroom time and demonstrated excellent business acumen.
Business Administration Lecturer Jo Manser said “I heard about Jim’s great work so brought him into the college to speak to our students. I was so impressed by their enthusiasm for the project I wanted to incorporate their curriculum work into supporting this great cause.
“Their efforts have gone above and beyond; I’m very proud of their dedication and success and we’re all delighted to be supporting Jim and the Chengeta School project.”
