An employability course which has so far helped 41 per cent of participants into work is recruiting for October courses in Sunderland and South Tyneside.
The ‘Back in the Game’ programme, run by the Foundation of Light, takes a holistic approach to helping people gain long-term work and recognises that an overall change of lifestyle is often needed for people to remain in employment.
During the 10 week programme, which runs three days a week, participants undertake a variety of exercises designed to develop their skills, attitude and physical fitness.
They are also offered a two-week work placement and the chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications in Workskills (level 1) and Functional Skills in Maths and English (up to level 2 depending upon individual ability), as well as a Heart Start Emergency first aid qualification.
Those who complete the course have guaranteed interviews with Gateshead-based contact centre and fulfillment firm, Spark Response, as well as the opportunity to take part in further courses such as Manual Handling and First Aid.
Since launching in 2009 the scheme has worked with almost 400 adults across Sunderland, South Tyneside and County Durham, with over 41 per cent gaining employment and almost 90 per cent saying it has increased their motivation to find work and improve their lives.
Back in the Game Coordinator Dave Jeffries said: “The Back in the Game programme is focused on helping people as individuals, addressing their specific challenges and moving them closer to their goals and aspirations. I think our record of getting people into work is huge testament to how well this works and we’re excited about the courses starting in October.”
The latest Back in the Game courses will start on October 15 for South Tyneside residents and October 16 for Sunderland residents.
Both will take place at the Stadium of Light and are being funded by South Tyneside Family Adult Community Learning and ISOS Housing, with Expedient Training also contributing to the Sunderland programme.
All participants must be referred by Job Centre Plus at least one week prior to the course commencing and will have their suitability for the programme review by staff form the Foundation of Light before being enrolled.
