Players of the People’s Postcode Lottery have generously awarded Whizz-Kidz £200,000 to transform the lives of disabled children and young people.
This money will help Whizz-Kidz provide even more disabled children and young people with vital mobility equipment, wheelchair skills training, residential camps and work placements.
One of the young wheelchair users who has benefited from the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery is 19 year old Kayleigh Millar from Devizes, she is a Whizz-Kidz Ambassador and Kidz Board member.
Kayleigh has a disability caused by a head injury when she was younger. After attending Whizz-Kidz wheelchair skills training, she realised she needed a new wheelchair to gain her independence.
Kayleigh said, “Having to be pushed everywhere means you are limited from accessing the world. You’re restricted physically and mentally. You can’t do things yourself and that’s what I thought disability had given me – no independence. I thought I couldn’t be anything else.
“I got my new Whizz-Kidz wheelchair in 2015. It’s an active manual lightweight chair, one of the sportiest designs. I did lots of research about the chair I wanted.
“My whizz-kidz therapist talked to me and helped me to understand what I needed. I thought about the functionality and how it looks. I wanted it to fit my personality! I chose blue and silver colours to go with any outfit. It also has no handles because I knew I didn’t need to be pushed.”
Kayleigh is now studying for a BA in Charity Development at Chichester University. Her wheelchair has given her the freedom to travel independently.
Whizz-Kidz CEO Ruth Owen OBE said, ‘I would like to thank the Players of People’s Postcode Lottery for their continued support. Whizz-Kidz has received £500,000 in funding over the past three years to help us carry out life-transforming work, by supplying equipment and skills training.
“These services play a pivitol role in building a young person’s confidence and independence, enabling them to live their life to the full and reach their potential.”
