The Forest Flyerz stop by to tell us more about their fully-inclusive hockey club.
In 2011, Waltham Forest Hockey Club launched Forest Flyerz, their disability section for young people with a learning or physical disability.
The sessions have gone from strength to strength with more and more young people attending, and recently the launch of new adult sessions. In that time we’ve seen many Flyerz learn new hockey skills, improve co-ordination, social skills and teamwork, and have a blast along the way.
The hockey sessions have been recognises several times in the past year, with awards for Best Inclusive Club, and also an appearance on ITV’s Surprise Surprise!
Sessions are led by qualified coaches and assisted by volunteer coaches so everyone gets the support they need; and thanks to the generosity of our partners and volunteers, they’re absolutely free! We’re also supporting other hockey clubs to set up similar sessions, so it won’t be long before any of our members who want to play competitive matches will have that option.
Here’s what some people have to say about our sessions:
“Flyerz is a club our kids have been crying out for – there’s no other club like it. The sessions are very co-ordinated and structured, and the kids are enjoying it immensely. My son talks about it every day.”
“I was really pleased that my son joined in as much as he did – he is often very suspicious of new activities and it can usually take weeks for him to take part”
Sessions run every Tuesday, 7-8pm for ages 6-18 and 8.30-9.30pm for ages 18+ at Walthamstow Academy, Billet Road, E17 5DP.
Sessions are absolutely FREE! All equipment is provided, so you just need to turn up.
We’re always keen to welcome new Flyerz.
