Shaw Trust’s unique county-wide gardening service based in Basingstoke and Portsmouth is celebrating its success in supporting 11 people into work since October 2013. Shaw Trust Enterprises – Hampshire provides these gardening services and is keen for more businesses and households to sign up to receive its services so it can help more local unemployed and disabled people into work, while providing gardening support across the county. The more people who sign up for its gardening services, the more people it can help.
Shaw Trust Enterprises – Hampshire has nine gardening teams working across Hampshire: six in Portsmouth and three in Basingstoke. It gives gardening support to local households, schools, housing associations and hospitals, providing garden maintenance, clearances and landscaping. It also offers disadvantaged locals the chance to undertake a 12-week training programme towards a Level 1 City & Guilds Practical Horticultural Skills certification. Trainees are given the option of applying for six-month paid work experience placements after their training ends as stepping stones to careers in the horticultural industry.
Lee Care, from Portsmouth, suffered from depression after his grandmother passed away. Lee enrolled on the 12-week training programme and was taken up as one of the enterprise’s stepping stone recruits after completing his training. This helped him to find longer-term employment working as a carer in a dementia care home.
Lee says: “I’ve learned so much from my time with Shaw Trust Enterprises – Hampshire. It’s a really worthwhile scheme. It has brought me out of my shell and really is a great stepping stone.”
Shelley Southon, Shaw Trust projects and enterprise manager, says: “Shaw Trust Enterprises – Hampshire is a very exciting venture for us. We are maintaining the gardens of residents who need our assistance and we are able to offer training, work experience and employment opportunities to unemployed local people who want to forge horticultural careers.”
