The British Paralympic Association (BPA) today welcomed the announcement by UK Sport that will see an overall increase to funding of 43% into Paralympic sport for the Rio cycle.
The BPA has always maintained that, for the Paralympic movement in the UK, London should be a springboard onto greater things. UK Sport’s increased level of investment into Paralympic sport as a whole reflects that and we are delighted that the strong performance of the ParalympicsGB team in London has acted as the catalyst.
UK Sport’s high level goal – of the UK being the first nation in recent history to be more successful in both the Olympics and Paralympics post hosting, in terms of medals won – is the right ambition to have following a home Games and this level of investment across both Olympic and Paralympic sport is clearly a fundamental part in delivering that. In the Paralympic movement, there is an increasing level of sophistication and investment by other nations and London showed just how tough the competition is getting. This funding is vital therefore in maintaining our position as a leading nation in Paralympic sport.
As the NPC whose members encompass all the winter and summer Paralympic sports, we are conscious that not every sport will have received the news that they were hoping for today. Just as we have done in this cycle, we will continue to seek ways to work with these sports with the aim of taking the largest, most competitive team to the next editions of the Games.
